The Breathing IQ: An Anthropometric Index of Diaphragmatic Breathing Efficiency
At Ice Bath Boston & Breath, we use the BIQ to assess and correct dysfunctional breathing mechanics, helping clients breathe more efficiently for better stress regulation, reduced anxiety, and improved physiological function.
Impact on Our Work:
A single 90-minute session of corrective breathing exercises significantly improved breathing range of motion (ROM) and location of movement (LOM) in 89.5% of participants (N=384, p<0.001).
Key Findings:
This study introduces the Breathing IQ (BIQ) as a novel method to assess diaphragmatic breathing efficiency and identify biomechanical breathing dysfunctions.
Our Contribution:
Many breathing pattern disorders (BPD) go undiagnosed because they are traditionally limited to hyperventilation syndrome. However, mechanical breathing dysfunction plays a critical role in both physical and mental health.

Ultrasound Validation of the Breathing IQ
Researching the potential for cold exposure to alleviate symptoms of PMS, PMDD, endometriosis, PCOS, and menopause by reducing inflammation and stabilizing mood and hormone-related symptoms.
Exploring how ice baths help individuals develop a sense of control and safety under stress, a key factor in reducing anxiety and emotional dysregulation.
Investigating how societal beauty standards (e.g., “sucking in” for a narrow waist) impact rib expansion and breathing mechanics, potentially contributing to the higher rates of anxiety in women.
In collaboration with Dr. Belisa Vranich, we are conducting a study using ultrasound imaging to further validate the BIQ’s ability to measure diaphragmatic breathing efficiency.
Our commitment to research extends beyond published work—we are actively exploring new areas of breathwork and cold exposure science to optimize stress regulation, mental resilience, and women's health.
